I Can Follow the Prophet Singing Time

So I'll admit my spinner is not my finest power point work but it will have to do for Sunday!  It's the final Sunday before Conference and the theme is about following the prophet so it's a great Sunday to sing our old favorite "Follow the Prophet!"

I'm adapting a little of this and that to make for a fun Sunday.  First we'll talk about the importance once again of listening to the words of prophets in the scriptures as well as prophets that will be speaking in General Conference.  Then we'll start by having a volunteer come and spin the spinner.  They'll get a chance to then answer a corresponding question about that prophet.  When they've answered a question we'll sing that verse while passing a small ball or balloon up and down the aisles.  Whoever the ball ends up with at chorus time will have to answer another question about that prophet.  If they get it right they get to choose to do disco actions for the chorus or asl actions or march in place (sometimes I let them stand up on their chairs and march)!! 

After singing the whole verse we'll start fresh with a new volunteer on the spinner and move on to another verse or continue that one.  It should be easy and fun and if it lands on a line I'll let them choose a favorite song or something, I'm just going to see how it goes and how the kids are.  You never know!  I'm a little excited for Conference because I get a whole week off to not think about planning a Singing Time. . .ha ha! David and Goliath Singing Time

So I found a new primary chorister site with some fun ideas I thought I'd pass along.  I'm excited to keep this idea for a review Sunday or Primary Program Prep next year!  Here's what I found on this site

"I quickly shared the story of David and Goliath and how David had faith and the help of the Lord and he was able to conquer Goliath. I made sure to stress that our Goliath's are not always a bad thing. The primary program is a good Goliath but just a monumental, huge task that would require a lot of work on our part but just like with David, with the help of the Lord we would be successful.

I'd gathered up a bunch of stones from my back yard and numbered them 1-10, each one corresponding to one of the songs we're singing in our program.  I put the stones in a bag and let a child come up and pick a stone.  We then sang that song.

Here's the fun part, depending on how well they sang the song, they got to take a shot at the target on Goliath.  If they sang the song just okay, I let a child come up and try to hit Goliath with a small marshmallowt.  If they sang it really well, they got to use a large jet-puffed marshmallow.  If they did it perfectly, they could use one of the jumbo-sized marshmallows (these are kind of new but they are at a few stores here).

While this activity could have gotten a little rowdy, the kids were really good about keeping a reverent tone.  It definitely engaged them and got them singing. I think we did a pretty good job with conquering Goliath! :)"

Singing Puppets!

I was in the store looking at those ridiculous harmonizing little toys and I thought of how fun it would be to use puppets in primary to make things interesting.  I'm thinking that to make it more appropriate and church themed I could make the puppets look like fun versions of Helaman, Sariah, Nephi, etc.  Then while singing songs the kids could use the puppets to sing certain phrases or certain parts for a duet song.  I don't know, I think it could be a fun way to let the kids use their puppetry skills and if not I can make a puppet do some pretty fun things!  P.S.  here's a tutorial on how to make sock puppets with those great wide mouths.  Click Here

Year End Class Talent Show!

Okay so I'm furiously reaching to find an idea for tomorrow's final 2010 Singing Time and this great idea pops in my head!!  What if we had an impromptu year end class talent show!  Here's how it will work.  Each class/teacher will be handed an envelope and a bag of props or pictures.  Inside the envelope is a song and the requirements for the talent show performance.  In the bag are props or pictures that may be used.  I will give everyone about 5-7 minutes to converse and plan quietly and then we'll begin!  I will allow "golf clapping" at the end of each class.  Since this might now work smoothly with my GIANT Jr. Primary I will adapt the idea so that two people will come up and one will choose a song out of a bucket and one will roll the "how we sing it" dice to see how we will sing the song.  Simple easy and fun.  Here's the songs and props I plan to use.

1. Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam - required to use props and actions to emphasize the words of the song while singing loudly for all the hear!  (props include picture of Jesus, flashlight, and sunbeam on a stick!)
2. I Hope They Call Me On A Mission - required to use props and/or actions to emphasize the words of the song. (props include missionary name tag, ruler, scriptures)
3. The Holy Ghost - required to use props and actions to emphasize the words of the song (props will include several gospel art pictures I used to teach the song to the Jr. Primary this year.)
4. Activity Song Intermission - Do As I'm Doing - required to sing it three times and cannot use marching, clapping or jumping.  A list of ideas will be included with things like "hand jive, chicken dance, military style, etc."
5. Once Within A Lowly Stable - Required to pose a living nativity while singing.  (props include items for a living nativity, i.e., scarves, robes, baby Jesus, etc.)
