Stand For the Right 2012 Week One

I've debated all week on how to reintroduce this song since we just learned it last year and it's really quite easy. I really wanted to emphasize that prophets are put her on earth to be watchmen on towers that guide us throw this life safely.  I want the kids to know what it means to "stand for the right" and "be true."  I want them to know what President Monson said about this (collection of quotes found here which I plan to use later this month).  And most importantly I want them to be able to realize that next month during conference they will be hearing those words from the apostles and prophet that will guide them safely through this life.  I found an amazing lesson plan in an old "Primary Partners" Follow the Prophet book.  I can't post the pictures because of copyright laws but here's the idea.

There's a huge tower with the prophet and his apostles on top of it.  On the tower is written "Prophets and apostles are watchmen on the tower."  Then there are several large conversation bubbles with different ways of following the prophet listed.  There's

1. Repent
2. Have Family Home Evening
3. Keep the Commandments
4. Study the Scriptures
5. Share the Gospel
6. Forgive One Another
7. Keep the Word of Wisdom
8. Attend Church Meetings
9. Attend the Temple
10. Pray Often
11. Follow the Savior Jesus Christ
12. Pay Tithing
13. Love One Another
14. Keep the Sabbath Day Holy
15. Dress Modestly
16. Be Honest

For each of these topics there is a corresponding quote from an apostle or prophet that emphasizes the importance of this.  After singing through the song I will just introduce and talk about each bubble in Junior Primary, I'll let the little ones help me hang them up by the prophet as we talk about them.  In Sr. Primary I'll hide the quote under their chair and then I'll have them read their quote and match it to the picture.  For each two quotes/pictures we'll sing Stand for The Right with great exuberance!

Luckily it's only been a year since we got to teach this amazingly simple and testimony building song.  That being said I do plan on recycle some old ideas as well as bringing in some new.  Here's the link to lasts year's teaching and review ideas, maybe they will help.

1st Quarter Jeopardy Review!!

This week I'm doing a 1st Quarter Jeopardy Review!!  Here's my categories and questions. (I will post a picture of my finished Jeopardy board when it's done today!!)  You are welcome to download and change and use however to fit your own primary and the themes you have been emphasizing while teaching.  I want to really focus on the messages and gospel principles we have been learning while gaining testimonies through songs. 

I think that with each point value if the question is answered correctly we will sing the corresponding song in a fun way. I'll put little pictures to show the reward on the bottom of the jeopardy board.  Here's the link for the pictures I used and colored just from google image searches. You can find fun dice for these styles here.  Such as:

• 100 points - Swimmer Style (plug you nose with one hand, swim with the other)
• 200 points - Cowboy Style (western twang in your voice, start out with a yeehaw and  link your thumbs in you belt loops and kick up the dust with your heels)
• 300 points - Opera Style (lots of vibrato and exaggeration and definitely loud but never louder than lovely!)
• 400 points - Drill Sargeant (stand at attention, no moving arms or legs, definitely no giggling or smiling.  March back and forth looking for things out of place and start out with a "yes ma'm!")
• 500 points - Granny Style (use your hand to wiggle your throat and make your voice shaky, bend over and hold your back like you can't walk upright!)
• 600 points - Police Officer Style (use stop and go signs to direct the traffic)
• 700 points - Song and style of your choice!!

Stand For The Right Review!!

The kids learned the song so well last week that I'm planning on reviewing just one more week and then continuing to learn our "Books of the Book of Mormon" and "Latter-Day Prophets" songs.  So here's my plan and once again because I  can't seem to get myself in gear this week I'm using a lot of all of your amazing ideas and just tweaking them a bit!  I love love love that everyone is so creative and so sharing, it makes my calling so much easier when I'm having a "can't think straight" week!

I'm going to start by reminding the kids that we have a living prophet today that speaks to us.  And the words he speaks are what Jesus and Heavenly Father would tell us if they were here on earth!  I will tell them some of the great things that our prophet Thomas S. Monson has told us.

• Stand for the Right, even if you stand alone.
• “Children, let your parents know you love them. Let them know how much you appreciate all they have done and continue to do for you.”
• “Don’t be afraid to walk out of a movie, turn off a television set, or change a radio station if what’s being presented does not meet your Heavenly Father’s standards.”

Someone has collected an awesome set of quotes here.  Plus I may use the idea on that link for another week, it's pretty sweet!

So I'm going to print out this "leg cube" and just sing the song through like 3 times to make sure they remember what it it about.  I always post or hold up my visuals for those who really learn visually too.  After reviewing it a little I am going to do the Life Size Tic-Tac-Toe.  I will probably just set up chairs as the grid instead of having them stand in the square since they tend to get restless when standing by each other too long (at least my primary kids do. . .you may all have perfectly behaved angels!!).  It's going to be a fun Sunday!!!

Always remember to infuse a little movement and a little fun and I've learned that you can never expect children to sit perfectly still, they have to move, rarely can a child sit all through primary without being a bit fidgety.  I just remember that if I can get them to connect with me even once that I've passed along a bit of my testimony to them.   Good Luck!!!

Stand For The Right Introduction!!

In preparation for this week I printed a flipchart for Stand For The Right from here  then I colored and jazzed them up and added some "bees" to the "Be True" pages. 

Next I borrowed these cute images from here and sized them down to finger puppet size.

So on Sunday I started with talking about Standing for the Right and what it really means.  I used idea #3 from here and tweaked it a little.  I had one person be the friend who was tempting you to make bad choices and then the other person was someone trying to stand for the right.  The I had the two kids link arms and I pretended to be the person trying to pull them away from good choices and we talked about how important good friends are. 
I introduced the song using this awewsome rhythm idea and just changing it up to fit our primary. 

In Jr. Primary we just used claps and then stood up at the end.  We sang it super stacatto to really emphasize the words and then we'd change it up and use stomps or leg taps.  We also did a bit of marching in place.  They really appreciated the movement and learned the song really well, even my sunbeams!!  I passed out the finger puppets and we sang the song a couple times and held up the correct sides for "BE TRUE" and "Stand for the Right!"  They loved the little finger puppets.

In Sr. Primary I split everyone into three groups and handed them a bit of the flipchart and assigned them a clap, stomp or snap.  After we went through it we would switch and see how well they listened to the other parts.  In the end they learned the song and its meaning amazingly well.  We finished with having three kids come up front and do all the clapping,stomping,snapping, and singing and we watched to see if they could do it perfect.  Then they invited a friend or someone they wanted to be their friend and they linked arms and did it using teamwork (ie clap your left hand with their right hand, etc.)  It was really fun.
